Biophony

by-o-fow-nee

Biophony is the collective sound that living organisms produce (i.e. a wolf howling, a cat meowing, or a bird singing). Animals vocalize for many different reasons—group hunting, navigation, predator avoidance, territory defense, and mate selection. All are vital communications for survival and continuation of species. It is important to protect natural soundscapes against noise pollution to ensure the ability of animals to receive and transmit acoustic information.
